Abstract

This paper proposes that children’s engagement with absurd cartoons reflects tolerance to unresolved perceptual prediction error under a permissive perceptual regime. Standard evaluative measures impose closure and collapse the phenomenon under study. A regime-preserving experimental design is introduced to detect engagement continuity without forcing preference, intensity ratings, or narrative interpretation.

Core claim

Children’s engagement with absurd perceptual violations does not require humor resolution or affect amplification. It reflects regime-dependent tolerance to unresolved prediction error.
